A THOUSAND THINGS A WOMAN SHOULD KNOW Chatm . ? . Poise ? . . Personality Just what is charm? It is that mysterious something that attracts fascinates enchants. In order to be charming you must be a thousand women in one. How often have you been to a party or dance and seen a certain girl the centre of attraction? She may not be as pretty as some of the other girls, yet the men crowd around her like moths around a candle. This girl, whether she knows it or not, possesses the secret of Charm. A little fragrance of perfume lingers around wherever she may be, a perfume expressing her individual personality, and perfumes play a very important part. A heavy perfume is very bad taste. If you are the dark exotic type use rose perfume. If you have brown hair and brown eyes select gardenia, if you are the titian type (red head), lily-of-the-valley is suited to you, and if you are the blonde type lavender or lilac should be your choice. The first essential in cultivating and developing charm is immaculate cleanliness. Never neglect your bath night and morning, and be sure to use the same perfume in your soaps, bath salts, and toilet water. When you have your hair shampooed have it rinsed with the same perfume. Next comes your under clothes, they must be washed each night or clean ones put on each day. No runs in your hose. Your hair must be neat and present that glossy sheen that indicates constant care, your nails manicured, but no vivid colouring used for daytime wear. The dark red shades belong to the evening. Care of your mouth and teeth come next. Brush them three times a day with a good paste or powder and always use a little baking soda afterwards to neutralize any trace of acids. The next thing is your walk. Do you walk gracefully? This is all-important. To cultivate a graceful walk try placing a book on your head and walk around your room until you are tired. In a short time you will improve your carriage unbelievably. Few people walk properly. The correct way is to point your toes straight in front of you, don't point them out and when you are walking do the heel and toe, bring the heel down first and then raise up on your toes a little. The next thing to learn is the art of poise when seated. Don't slump in your chair, or sit in a round-shouldered fashion. Sit with your spine touching the back of the chair, all the way up. You will feel a hundred per cent, better, as well as look more attractive. Do not cross your legs, sit with one ankle slightly over the other, with your hands in your lap. Better still, place your feet together and sit relaxed. To maintain poise under all circumstances be cool calmand collected. Do not get ruffled or fret and fume over trivial things. It ruins the nerves and nervousness is the enemy of poise and charm. Perfect poise is mental as well as physical. Some of the chief indications of lack of poise are jerky movements, tapping the fingers on desk or table, biting the finger nailis, tapping the floor with the feet and squirming and turning in all directions. These are all signs of nervousness and breaches of good manners. If you are the nervous typeon edge so to speakgoing at great speed all the time you must learn how to relax. HOW TO RELAX The proper way to do this is to lie down and let first one, and then the other arm drop as if they were lifeless. Raise one leg and let it fall heavily on the bed. Do the same with the other leg. Now raise your head off the pillow and let it fall gently back. Even if you cannot spare much time, ten minutes relaxation will work wonders. Remember relaxation is just as important as exercise. If nerves are the cause of your trouble you must get at least nine hours sleep. Early morning walks in the fresh air are an excellent nerve tonic. Use auto suggestion. Tell yourself that you are going to overcome your nervousnessit helps a lot. Drink a quart of milk a day and eat lots of green vegetables that contain iron such as turnip tops, green peppers, celery, water cress, parsley, cabbage, carrots and spinach. When you feel exceptionally nervous stretch your arms out from the shoulders. Clasp your hands behind your back and draw up your chest, at the same time bring your chin down towards your chest. Now grasp the flesh at the nape of
