PROFITS OF THE NEW YORK PAPERS.
Newspaper circles in New York have been more
or less interested in a recent talk Mr. Pulitzer, of The
Word, gave to a London paper, in which he made
-.S\ .the slatement that most of the metropolitan papers
were in a bankrupt conditton. This statement has
E surprised some of the men on Newspaper Row,
but to the best informed it presents a confirmation
of their own opinions and views.
There is no doubt that the number of New York
, f- ' d f^Vi papers that an show a balance on the right side of
the ledger is smaller now than it has been in many
, - E« vnears before. The profitable papers in New York
are easily counted on the fingers of one hand. Even
Mr. Pulitzer's own paper is experiencing a deprecia-
W r-r- 3 mxl ronin its profit-making power. It is understood
f* .. / _/ that the Sunday edition of The World yields a large
f .G/» profit as does the evening edition; but the morning
Mb. GrORGE W.rG-eL edition is said to be sailing very close to the wind..
