bought large tracts of land in Prince.
Edward Island, and he was engaged in the
iron works erected at Clementsport. His
wide interests did not interfere: with civic
duties. Along with Michael Tobin, he
administered poor relief during the hard
winter of 1820-21, when Halifax Harbour

Within the next few years, he has
advanced still furt.her. In 1825 his name
appears as one of the founders of the Hali-
fax Banking Company. Projects for estab-
lishing a local bank had been mooted for
years; at last the much needed aid to busi-
ness came into being. In the same year S.
Cunard and Company figure as agents for
the Honourable East India Company. The
first direct shipment of tea, 6,517 chests, in
the Countess of Hlarcourt, reached Halifax
