Leur terrain (chapelle, couvent

Champ-de-Mars, le Palais de Justice
et le nouvel H?tel de Ville. Une
?glise fut ajout?e plus tard aux
autres b?timents et reconstruite en
1742 sur de plus grandes dimen-
sions; cette derni?re faisait face ?
la rue formant aujourd'hui le c?t?
est de la Place Jacques Cartier.
C'est dans cette terre, autrefoissa-
cr?e,que reposent les cendres de plu-
sieurs de ces intr?pides missionnai-
res qui arros?rent de leurs sueurs et
de leur sang la semence ?vang?lique.
A partir de 1773, c'est-?-dire
apr?s un si?cle et demi de travaux
fructueux, les derniers restes de la
Compagnie supprim?e s'?teignirent
les uns apr?s les autres. Le P?re
Well, le derniier de Montr?al, mou-
rut en 179x, et le P?re Cazot, der-
nier de Qu?bec, en i8oo,au moment
m?me o? dans le nord de l'Europe
Dieu, par une providence toute

Compagnie def?sus en Russie, pen-
dant la tourmente r?volutionnaire,
i l'abri et comme en r?serve pour
de meilleurs jours.
Durant leur vie le gouvernement
anglais avait laiss? aux P?res l'admi-
nistration des biens de leurs com-
munaut?s ; ? leur mort, en dehors
de tous les droits et malgr? les
r?clamations, il se proclama leur
h?ritier sans plus de c?r?monie.

Their prop;rty, including chapel,
convent and garden, covered nearly
all the grouid now occupied by the
Champ de Mars (drilling ground),
the Court House and the new City
Hall. At a later period a church-was
added and rebuilt on a larger scale
in 1742. The church faced the
street which now forms the Eastern
side of Jacques Cartier Square.
In that ground then held sacred,
lie the ashes of many dauntless
missionaries, who watered with their
sweat and blood the seed of the
GospeL
After toiling for a century and a
half, previous to the year 773, the
members of the oppressed Society
of Jesus, then resident in Canada,
were gradually gathered to their
fathers. Father Well, the last sur-
vivor in Montreal, died in 1791,
and Father Cazot, the last in
Quebec, in 8oo00, at the very time
when by a special providence, God
preserved the remnants of the So-
ciety of Jesus in the North of Eu-
rope, by providing them a shelter in
Russia, where, screened from the
revolutionary storm which swept
over the continent, they patiently
awaited the advent of better times.
During the life - time of the
Fathers, the English government
allowed them the administration of
the property belonging to their
communities; but after their death,
in defiance of rights and protesta-
tions, the crown unceemoniously
annexed everything to itself
